Hidden Landscapes documentary May 19th

Marks the 332nd anniversary of the massacre at Great Falls

Narragansett Deputy Tribal Historic Preservation Officer Doug Harris and documentary filmmaker Ted Timreck will be bringing Timreck's work-in-progress documentary about Native American sacred stone landscapes in Eastern North America, "Hidden Landscapes" with a section specifically dealing with the stone ceremonial site at the Turners Falls Airport, to the Great Falls Discovery Center Great Hall in Turners Falls on May 19th, 7:00 p.m. May 19th is the 332 anniversary of the massacre at Great Falls, where Captain Turner and 145 men wiped out an encampment of more than three hundred of Native American women, children and elderly in a dawn raid.

The stone formation on a hilltop at the Turners Falls Airport is slated to be removed as part of a planned $5 million runway extension project; the Narragansetts and Wampanoag Tribe of Gayhead (Aquinnah) claim the site is a significant ceremonial site that contains medicine that was put there millenia ago to keep "the area in balance."

The dispute has caused a delay in the runway project, while the FAA and the National Trust for Historic Preservation assess the significance of the site. Harris invites all members of the general public to come watch the film, ask questions, and learn about the ceremonial significance of the site at the airport hill.

Share your sense of place - May 20th

In preparation for an artistic pathway to be created on one of the pedestrian paths from the downtown to the hill section of Turners Falls, a community visioning session will be held to give the community a chance to talk about sense of place and visions for the pathway. Long time and new residents, youth, those who work in town, and all associated with Montague's past present and future are encouraged to come to the Great Hall on Tuesday May 20 to share stories with each other facilitated by Annaliese Bischoff. Three Hallmark Museum Exhibits

Three photographic exhibitions, embracing vastly different lives, are currently showing at Hallmark Museum of Contemporary Photography. Linda Butler's "Meditations on Simplicity", at Gallery 56, is a photographic meditation on the architecture and objects of the Shakers, a religious sect that flourished in the eastern United States over a century and a half ago. Lili Almog's "Perfect Intimacy", an immersion into the cloistered worlds of three female Carmelite monasteries in Maryland, United States; Haifa, Israel; and Bethlehem, Palestine, opened at Gallery 52. Stella Johnson's "AL SOL", at Gallery 85, features images the artist created during nearly twenty years documenting the lives of families in rural Mexico, Nicaragua and the Cameroons, West Africa. All exhibits continue through June 15, 2008
